Dr. Ian Murray serves as Professor of Physiology at Alice L. Walton School of Medicine. In this role, he is developing an active-learning physiology curriculum designed to enhance medical student learning with whole health principles.

Prior to joining the School, Dr. Murray served as Interim Associate Dean of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at the Texas A&M University School of Medicine, where he also taught histology, physiology, and research methods. As Director of the Medical Student Research Institute at St. George’s University in Grenada, he created a research course, organized the annual research conference, and supervised and matched medical students to research mentors. He also has course director experience in respiratory physiology and pre-med physiology.

Dr. Murray has significant research experience and ran a lab for six years with a focus on Alzheimer’s disease research. His thesis work at McGill University in Quebec and postdoctoral and Research Associate work at the University of Pennsylvania focused on the mechanisms underlying diabetes, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s. Since 2014, he has focused on medical education and actively involves students in research.

Dr. Murray earned his bachelor’s degree in biology from University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada, and his PhD in physiology from McGill University in Montreal. He recently completed his master’s in healthcare education at Texas A&M University.

Dr. Murray has served on several university committees including the Question Review and Curriculum committees. He has also served on external committees, most recently serving as Chair of the 2023 International Association of Medical Educators (IAMSE) Virtual Forum.
